I found out about this movie because my son's involved with getting the distribution going, but now that I've seen the trailer, I just want to share the movie! http://omgmovie.com/ (I have a special fondness for Mr. Jackman, for lots of reasons. This just adds to them.)

Went to the Mill Valley Film Festival tonight.

There is so much to say, and there are so few words to say it with.

Director John Hillcoat was there and spoke briefly before the showing. What a lovely man. So respectful of Cormac McCarthy's story, and the way it came to him. Courteous to the actors in the way he spoke of them. Grateful for being able to work in this medium of film, of storytelling. Appreciative that MVVF found a way to have the film as part of its opening night films. Thankful that we were all there for a 9:40pm screening.

His voice, when he spoke about Kodi- genuine respect, genuine care, genuine love.

The film: I'll talk more about it after its gone into as wide a release as it's going to. This, I'll say: I have never seen a more honest love story between parent and child. I've never seen a better filmic telling of a written tale. I've never seen so grim and sad a background bring to life the small things and large which make us humane, make us human. I've not felt this kind of hope in years.

It's technically perfect, from what I can tell. The acting is - it's remarkable. Everything I knew about them from the book, is in the film. The directing, the editing, the cinematography, costuming, set design and decoration, location scouting- to the last detail, perfect.

I don't expect it to win awards. It's --- people are scared of this world, this post-something world where it's down to who you brought with you inside yourself from before, and who you let yourself become, after, and what you leave of yourself with others. It is frightening to look at- but for me, it's more frightening not to look.

I want to be one of the good guys. I want to die carrying the fire.

I'm so very, very glad I saw this movie. I'll never see anything in my life the same way again.

It will always, always look better now, than it did before this evening.

Or it's Monday, innit?

Have done something to my neck, probably sitting badly at work every night because there's only an old banged up recliner for the nurse and sometimes I get lazy and just don't bother to get well situated, or get up and do exercises or anything. So am now (thank you, al) doing exercises to regain strength in my right shoulder. *sigh* prevention is so much better than repair. *lifts things*

Flipping through the channels looking for a good documentary or something, came across this description of The 6th Day (Ahnold Governator, back in the day): In the near future, a helicopter narrowly avoids an assasination attempt, then returns home to find he has been replaced by a clone who shares his memories; agents of hte cloning corporation target him...

Wait what? A helicopter's been cloned, and Ahnold plays the whirly-bird? Well hell, that explains California's finances, right? o.O

I don't miss the stress of uni, but I do miss having an excuse/reason/obligation to be outside in the sun, learning new things, getting some strides in, 2 or 3 times a week. Am hoping that with cooler weather and better sleeping I can work out a real schedule that includes studying for the IELTS just in case I can find work in the UK. I'm not really doing "RN level" work here now (according to custom and reimbursement by Medi-Cal), but my agency does give me difficult families who need an RN's understanding of family theory and case management, so I feel like I can at least TRY to find work in the UK. Just in case.

So, I'm just sayin'- I'm back in the study mode some. Funny how that works.

ETA another good site with shoulder exercises including v. short quicktime movies.

Plenty of holes. None of them mattered to me. I confess to not seeing all the movies- they disappointed me early, and I just let them go by.

I haven't rewatched all of TOS, either. I'm old enough to have seen them with my parents, week to week- my mother loved how subversive they were, my dad enjoyed the nods to actual science as much as he got a kick out of the nods to his favorite sci-fi authors, themes, and jokes. I was intrigued by the characters, by their development and by their relationships, but all too soon had to go off and be a grown-up myself, and just haven't had time to dive back in. Did spend some time with TNG, but more for the voices than the shows themselves- it was when I was laid low with a major depression, and would have it on in the background for companionship.

So, confessing to spotty knowledge and inexact fandom (or the other way around, whatever *F*): I loved this movie.

I could always, always always have had more of McCoy. Even more now, and who knows, I may just have to write him at some point to hear more of his story, but oh, I am a happy happy person with Bones. Kirk was good, Spock was damn fine, I liked this Sulu and got a kick out of this Scotty, and I feel Uhura is wronged again, always, but has a better chance this time at personhood so I'm appreciative of what Zoe Saldana brought.

But what I enjoy most, as a story-teller, is that I feel free to bring my own story to the movie. There are parts I reject as not matching my experience of Star Trek- and I feel like that's ok, that's allowed for, and I like that. There are technical things that annoy me, and other things that delight me, and I'll see it again in theatre and probably, at some point, end up owning it (I want the commentaries on the DVD to be good, damnit!).

So I'm gonna give it two thumbs up, a whole basketfull of fresh tomatoes, and a big smile- and hope for more McCoy in the next one. Damnit, Jim, I'm a fangirl, not a critic, and I want more McCoy. *nods*

8 weeks (less) until graduation. eeps!

8 weeks and a day before I start traveling. yay!

thought i could pick up some overtime at work, but apparently not. so, must sell more books and music and movies. lol! I have no paid time off, no vacation or holiday time (agency doesn't give any- not that i'm spendthrift with it, i don't earn any!), so am selling as much to cover expenses while gone as to afford the trip.

beneath the cut: cover (and sometimes illustration) scans of things I can't list on Amazon for one reason or another. Babies Board Books, YA novels that are long, long out of print, historical fiction that is long out of print. CDs not in Amazon's catalog. There may be magazines of Interest added to this list, so tag it, eh, if you collect magazines. )
So, you know. If you can help a girl out. Pass the word? Share my shop link with friends and family. If you're going to Amazon anyway, go in through my shop first, then to Search. That way, if you purchase something else on Amazon, I get referral bonuses.

Thanks for looking, sorry for the spam, am optimistic about your continuing ability to help me make this happen, and to find new homes for lovely books, movies, cds, and so on. And Blessings on your heads.

I know I'm spamming with the Amazon links, so no more of those until I have fresh movies up there, and start putting books up. (My books are so old, and not pristine, but a lot of them are out of print, and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be reading them anytime soon, so why not let them find new homes, if they can?)

But it's working, it's working- I've made some money at it, I've made some space, getting the movies to new homes, I'm supporting the economy (at least the Postal Service and the mailer-envelope people, and Longs, Walgreen's, and Raley's), and I'm feeling oddly accomplished about it all.

I'm also managing to do some yoga and stretching every night I work (though not always on my nights/days off, there's just not the space in my room). I take my yoga mat and block and strap and pillow and ice packs with me to work, and do what I can. And that's helping, too.

Sleep remains an issue. Mostly that's just night shift. And a bit of arthritis, now, and sometimes too much monkey-mind scampering over the synapses. Otoh, I'm eating more healthily- I know this for a fact, because I'm doing better keeping track of my expenses every day week or two- it's part of the Financial Intelligence track of Your Money or Your Life, and I like breaking it down into the exact things that I buy. It helps me see what habits I'm in, where I'm not paying attention, and where my life energy's leaking away from where I want it to be to somewhere else, somewhere that doesn't contribute to my over-all well-being.

I'm not able to visit as much on AIM or YIM as I'd like. I hit Facebook off and on, but can't really keep up with the green patch goodies and pirates vs. ninjas (sorry). I'm doing a bit of writing, here and there, but most of it's just scraps and doesn't make its way out of the notebooks. When I read, I'm reading Adrienne Rich and Ariel Dorfman and Ray Bradbury and Barbara Tuchman and Howard Zinn, but mostly I'm not even reading, these days. I'm nearly done with the two critical thinking papers (down to the freakin' wire, what?) and will be graduating in May, then off to Europe, and friends, and beloveds, and adventures.

It's ok. I feel, for the most part, accomplished, well cared for, intelligent, able to think for myself and ask for help with things I can't do by myself, and really. That's not bad. Can't complain about that. :)

Back in 2003, laid up with a foot injury and newly introduced to the wonder that is a five-disc DVD player, I went on a spree of watching as much as I could of LOTR actors, to get my own sense of what they'd brought to make the LOTR characters come to life.

One I knew from before LOTR is Elijah, because Radio Flyer is one of my all-time favorite movies, for all its faults. I've met the director, Richard Donner, and it was filmed not far from where I live now, and Lij and Joseph Mazzello give very good performances.

Anyway.

This post isn't about Radio Flyer (though that IS for sale over at EnjoyIt!, my Amazon resellers shop.

No, this is about a copy of Chain of Fools that I bought during my I don't mind if it's not a Region 1 DVD, let me get a multi-region player and watch it anyway period. The notes on the back cover are in Swedish, and the subtitles are in- well, let the cover tell you: Språk: audio: Engelska
Textningar: Svenska, Engelska, Danska, Finska, Norska, HollaUandska, Poldsk, Tjedckiska, Ungerska, Turkiska

It's a Region 2 DVD. If I were able to sell it on Amazon USA I'd ask $3.00 US for it, and the shipping. Since I can't sell it there but want it to have a good home, I'm offering it here for 2 Eur. paid to my Paypal account, and you pay the shipping.

If I can't sell it here, I'll just bring it with me to Europe in summer and set it free at a flea-market or second hand store. But I thought i'd try you guys, first. Or, hey- I can bring it with me and ship it From Europe to you In Europe, too. but that won't be til June.

To those who've supported my movie sale by either buying yourselves, or passing on the word, Thank you Thank you! it's working!

EnjoyIt, Where I am selling DVDs for now, but will, at some point, also have used books, some housewares, a few vintage odds and ends, and maybe even vintage beads.

Tell your friends. Buy movies from me. (I have some rare-ish ones, and a few Region 2, also). Help me get back to Europe! and to stay afloat here at home. I've accumulated a lot of nice things over the years, but I don't need them now, and if they can make someone else happy AND bring a little fresh energy into my life, then all to the better.

Well. This has definitely been a challenge. I don't suppose it counts, the couple of days I posted more than once on that day, evening out the ones I missed.

I'm going to cheat, a bit, and post the film review paper I've written for my Chicano/Latino Film Studies class. I know it has flaws, both from a film review technique point of view, and as a piece of writing, but this is as far as I got before I just couldn't write anymore on it. And you know? I have a little place of pride for it. It's been a long time since I wrote a paper for school that used what I know as a nurse in a non-nursing class in a way that actually seems like it works.

Anyway. on with the show. and thanks for reading this month, and keeping me company. Blessings on your heads.

this is harder than it looks.

it would be so easy if there weren't so much i want to talk about, and if my brain would stay awake long enough to actually help me make coherent posts.

1) [info]tammy212 has better posts than I about the Health and Human Services "conscience rule". Deadline for HHS to decide is 10 days away now; Planned Parenthood Petition is here.

2) I love it when one sentence in a book opens the world tenfold for me. From The Wild Swan (my find from San Francisco last week) these sentences- just a bit of background information setting up Andersen's first round of travels as an adult: The Germany of independent states through which Andersen passed on his first visit was to be transformed within his lifetime. The Holy Roman Empire with its three hundred and ninety-six principalities, ecclesiastical states and free towns had been completely reorganized by Napoleon in 1806. After his defeat it was found impossible to restore the old order[...]

Which both reinforces that even in the known and incomplete history of the North American continent (about which, between Native American studies and Chicano/Latino Cinema, I am being given new points of view) there are orders and orders which came and went before Europe came; some of which is recorded, still, in the oral histories of the people still surviving and some, did we have eyes to see, in the geography and ecology of the continent itself.

3) I bought Miss Sarajevo. For a lot of reasons- because I have a good friend who is becoming a director of documentaries. Because people I admire and respect are involved in bringing his bookFools Rush In to the screen.

A lot of things about this film have made deep impressions on me, but the one that I'll mention here is the sight of the Bosnian National Library burning after being bombed, and Bill saying that '...with it burned basically all the history of Bosnia because Bosnia is a country with a lot of history written by monks and and clerics and whatnot and it pretty much is gone and that's a problem today because now you have a country with no real written history which can lead problems because it allows people to make up their own history and that is a problem in Bosnia today.' (quoted from the DVD.)

4) There are all kinds of ways history rewrites itself. Sometimes it's because one person pulls together threads and odds and ends of impressions and sees the pattern formerly woven that has been hidden from view by misdirection, by forgetting, by not-wanting-to-know.

My uncle, my father's oldest brother, was a bomber pilot in World War 2. I met him once. Over the years, in scraps of information from my father, I learned my uncle been shot down and captured at some point, came home very ill, and died young of cirrhosis caused both by starvation while he was a prisoner of war and partly by his drinking after he got home.

What I've put together since is this: he bombed Heroya, Hamburg, Paris, in 1943. He was shot down in France. He was held in one of the concentration camps, I don't know which one. I've walked in places that are changed forever because, before I was born, my father's older brother was dropping bombs on them.

I don't know what to do with that, really, or what it means, except that just as these two classes this term are giving me opportunities to re-view and re-learn, more globally, the smattering of history I've had in the past, so too this more personal connection to place, people, and history gives me opportunity to appreciate, to not take so much for granted, everything I have in my life.

Including my right to consider my body my own: not pre-or-post-pregnant, not a tool of the state or church or a man, but mine. I remember before Roe vs. Wade, before Planned Parenthood; I remember the thalidomide scandal and the deep shame that a man in our Friends Meeting, a physician who had prescribed thalidomide to mothers, felt as the facts came out, as he confronted what it meant to have been an unknowing part of that, and as he worked out how he, as a doctor, had to change his relationship to 'who owns the woman's body'.

This was in the 1950's. It was shocking and progressive and unusual that he spoke so, but I didn't know that- I thought it was part of some larger national conversation about how to be healthier, more intelligent, more compassionate, less insane.

And so here endeth PETDM # 14- with my (rambling, incoherent) plea to look again at what is being done in your name. I understand about conscience, I do- I could not give lethal injection. I have argued with surgeons about keeping some patients alive and allowing others to die. I recognize that there is indeed something precious and sacred about new life, and I'm not in a position to absolutely, categorically state when that life begins.

But taking away from the woman carrying the baby the right to determine her own health- that bothers me. Not developing the national conversation about the obligation of men to prevent unwanted pregnancy, to support the health and safety of communities, of mothers, of daughters- that bothers me.

So please. Go. Read. Take a stand, and stand behind it. You never know when, with the swipe of a pen or the pressing of a button, your life and all the lives you know are changed, irrevocably, and all you have left is how you've lived up until this moment.

well, that's sad.

i have two things, longer posts, unfinished, that meant to be the 12th, but they're not up where y'all can see them so they don't really count. i meant to be working on them and get them up, but work and uni and sleeplessness and sleep kind of stole the time from me.

moving on, hello, there.

been enjoying all the good interviews and photos to come out of the Toronto Film Festival. Also, found that I can watch Man of La Mancha uninterrupted on FanCast, which is, to me, amazing.

have almost caught up on sleep from the days in San Francisco. not on studying, mind you, although i did get very much more clear in my mind what we know of the interwoven and parallel time-lines of different Native American populations around the continent and how those relate to the time-lines of British, French, Spanish and Russian colonization with which I was somewhat more familiar.

I spent a lot of time here, at the University of California's Traditions of the Sun site. this is one of the things that thrills me about the 'net- that all these bits and pieces of people's experience and knowledge and so forth are not only in one place, but where i can (even if it's only online, even if it's only in a little QuickTime movie) learn from them.

life's complicated, innit? how we're all someway or another interconnected, even if we don't know about it?
